Total Uninstall is a valuable program for your computer. It acts like an undo in a word processing program. If you install software on your computer without using this program, remains or threads of software stay in your computer and cause it to make errors, slow processing speed, and crash. Although your operating system (Windows) contains a program to add/remove software it doesn't do a complete job.

A great example that illustrates this concept is car cleaning. You can take your car to the local gas station where the power wash will "clean" your entire exterior. When completed the wash you look at your car and notice dirt smudges and some remaining insect debree found in your grill. From a distance the car looks wonderful; as you approach the machine it appears very flawed. In the short run, minor dirt won't hurt anything but over the months your cars body deteriorates rapidly from the poor cleaning. Spending some elbow grease and an afternoon would cost the same amount of money (not counting time spent) and would give you 10 times the finish on the car. Total Uninstall does this without taking much extra time. It's a fail-safe in case the software you install doesn't work properly in the future; you can remove the software and turn your computer back to its original form before the software was even installed.

Here's how to use the program:

Step 1: Start Total Uninstall by double clicking the icon.

Step 2: Name the program properly and include the version. (This may seem pointless, however, the version number will be helpful should you ever require support). After you've entered the name in the "Install Application :____________" field, press "Next".

Step 3: Confirm the items to be pre-scanned in the "before" snapshot and click "Next".

Step 4: Choose the radio button labelled "Install one or more applications during this screen", but DO NOT CLICK NEXT!

Step 5: Instead of pushing "Next", leave Total Uninstall running and start the program you want to install by double clicking the install file of the program. It should end with .exe. If you're installing software from a CD, usually inserting the CD and opening the CD drive will start the installation so be sure you've completed Step 4 before inserting the CD.

The program will begin to install itself. As you proceed through the installation, be sure to choose "Custom Install" (if available) and uncheck any boxes/radio buttons where the software wants to install things to your system tray, internet browser toolbars or desktop. These icons or quick launch buttons only slow your computer down and take up space on your desktop.

If you are a client using Storm's new version 2 build, you can install the program to the default location, which is usually C:\Program Files. You can now continue to Step 6 in the following post.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CLIENTS USING A VERSION 1 STORM BUILD: Watch carefully through the installation as the program will ask you where you want to install it to. This is very important because proper file management on a computer is the same as paper management in the office - If a paper based document isn't filed properly, then you won't be able to find it when you go to look for it because it wasn't filed properly. The same thing happens with computers.

The next logical question is, where to install the new software? Luckily, we've a small table below that tells you where to put most programs. Once you pick the directory, skip to Step 6 in the next post.

Directory ..... File Types

D:\Documents ..... word processing, spreadsheet, presentation files that you created or viewed through email that you want to save should be stored here.

D:\Drivers ..... driver files for your entire computer hardware (ethernet, sound, video, keyboard, mouse, joystick, printer, scanner, scratchpad, USB plugins, etc. If your installing a piece of hardware the driver file should be stored here.

D:\Dvd ..... place all DVD player software here along with movies

D:\Games ..... naturally all gaming software is stored here

D:\Graphics ..... any graphics programs are placed here

D:\Internet ..... the Internet file is a large one as it encompasses all internet browsers, music downloading software, FTP software and messaging software. A good way to understand what enters this file's holdings is anything that relies on the internet to function

D:\Java ..... place all Java files here; you probably won't ever touch this directory

D:\Music\Players ..... all music playing software should be kept here

D:\Music\Editors ..... music editing software is held here

D:\Music ..... simply holds all playable music files

D:\OpenOffice ..... contains all program files related to Open Office

D:\Profiles ..... hold all email profiles stored on that computer

D:\Recycled ..... deleted files are temporarly stored until the files are permanently removed from the computer.

D:\System Utilities ..... all remaining programs that maintain computer performance (you'll notice Total Uninstall is found here).

D:\Temp ..... contains all temporary accessed files, never install anything here.

Please don't hesitate to contact us through our chat module if you're unsure where a program should be installed.

Your computer will probably restart itself before running the program - this is normal. It is also fine if it doesn't restart and automatically runs the program.

Step 6: Be sure you've started the freshly installed program at least once because it will make changes to your system upon first run. Some programs automatically restart, while others require users to prompt them. You need not perform any functions in the software, simply let it open and close it.

Step 7: After you've closed the new program, you may return to Total Unistall and press "Next". The program will finish scanning and you may install more software or exit the program. (To install more software simply start back at Step 1)

Software Removal

Step 1: Removing a program is easier than installing it. Just click "Start", then Settings, and finally Control Panel. Double click on "Add/Remove Programs". You'll notice that all the programs you've installed also display in the menu. Select the program you want to remove and press the "Add/Remove" button. If a pop up box asks you if you're sure you want to remove the program, select "Yes". The program will begin to remove itself.

Step 2: To be sure the program is removed we must also remove it in Total Uninstall. Start up Total Uninstall and change the radio button to "Uninstall or Review changes of a monitored application". Select the program you want to remove and press "Next".

Step 3: The computer will display the changes that were made during the installation. Press "Next" and the program will be removed.

Step 4: The computer will display one of two messages; if you recieve anything else contact us before going any further. The two safe messages are: "Uninstall complete without errors" and "Error: Counter already deleted ---> Application is already uninstalled?" Press "Next" and then "Exit" the program.
