so, i do this, and have no problems, except now need drivers to work with this computer:
HP Pavillion A6235X
(specs here:

and have downloaded some, but obviously not the right ones as they don't work.

I'm going to start by giving a generic response for other machines, and then we can drill down to your specific machine if need be. The drivers you're looking for, if not available at www.hp.com can most likely be found at www.driverguide.com - you just need to register for free (*definitely* worth it) and you'll be set. Worst case you'll need to track down part numbers of some peripherals like ethernet/video/sound/etc.

I recently installed XP on my HP DV9000 downgraded from vista.
Looking at that spec page it tells you some of the peripherals you should have already unless you've installed any extra/third party hardware.
The process was somewhat time consuming but the Device Manager helped in some ways too show what wasn't working. This will allow you to narrow your search down.
You'll have to do some hunting for your drivers it'll be worth it in the long run.
I can't recall the page I was on some were on the hp website a user had posted a "run down" of the required drivers and such for my specific model.
Perhaps a similar search on hp's support forums will assist you.

When I downgraded my PC from Vista to XP I ran into a few problems. In general it worked fine, the main problem I had is the XP sound driver malfunctioned like nobody's business. I tried updating it to the latest version as well as rolling it back to previous versions, but nothing was stable. All said and done I'm now back to Vista. I'd wait until the stable release of Windows 7 (http://vimeo.com/2674355) is out and upgrade to that. Windows 7 will be base on a way lighter core than Vista and XP which means it'll run faster and more stable. Everyone I know who participated in the beta thought it was awesome.

Should work fine so long as you install the correct drivers for your sound card and other devices my HP dv9000 runs smoothly on XP, since I downgraded.
It's possible that you had a bad batch of drivers or perhaps the incorrect ones.
